Will you marry my daughter? February 23, 2006

Last night I was at my parents’ house for a few hours while my Dad tried to fix my windshield wipers, which have not been wiping. At all.

So we’re watching American Idol and I’m helping my mom fold laundry. I’m giving her updates on each of the performers. (”He’s got his brother in the crowd.” Or “They barely showed him at all before this, so he’ll never make it through.” “Man, I hope Brenna gets cut.”) She doesn’t like Simon very much, but she is mildly amused by the show.

And then gray-haired Taylor Hicks comes on.

“Oh Mom, listen to him. I like this guy,” I said. “He sings really well and is really passionate about it and he just reminds me of the sweetest of the good ol’ Southern boys I know.”

“You like him?” Her ears perked up.

“Yeah, listen to him. He sings differently. Listen to him sing with that great strong voice with a bit of understated rasp. Not to mention, he seems cool. I could have a beer with him and he can play the harmonica.”

“How old is he? He’s got gray hair!”

“Um, late 20s? I don’t know, he’s older than I am.”

“Well, is he single?”

“What? How would I know that?”

“Well, I mean, is he? You know other things about other people. So, you should know if he is single. You seem to be really into him.”

Ah yes, my mother is trying to set me up with male semi-finalists from American Idol now. She has given up on random young men she sees at work, various sons and grandsons of people she knows and the occasional cute waiter or guy on the street. Poor mom. She just wants me to get married so very, very much.

Sigh.

So, call me, Taylor. A nice Southern boy like you would make my momma one very happy lady and my daddy a proud poppa.

Haha. Very cute. Maybe your mom’s onto something! :)

2. Neil - February 23, 2006

If I meet him walking around Hollywood, should I give him your number?

MY mom wasn’t all that worried about me being married. But my aunts were! One once asked me do you think (boyfriend of four years I’d just broken up with) will take you back? Whhhuuu?

I brought a girlfriend to a family wedding just to make them wonder if I was a lesbian.

Hee hee hee hee.

My mom still hasn’t exhausted the “your aunt knows a man who knows a man” possibilities yet. The latest was: “there’s this 40 year old lawyer somewhere in the states. He’s fat and bald and apparently very sweaty. But he’s single! Want me to give him your number?”

Yeah ma. You do that.

Question. How do you generally deal with that, Charming? Hm. Maybe I should put this question to you in your “ask me anything” post…

I love him! Taylor Hicks is so absolutely adorable. I barely ever watch the show, but I somehow managed to catch his audition, and now I can’t stop watching just cause he’s so damn cute.

My Mom asked me the other day if I was a lesbian. Quickly followed by “not that there’s anything wrong with that…” sigh. I feel your pain.

My grandmother once tried to set me up with some guy who helped her at a fruit stand. She wanted me to go back and ask him about the cantalopes.

I declined.

hilarious and cute! and yeah my mom can be the same way.

What a sweet mother you have!!! I love that about mothers, they had such angst over their daughters. So sweet.

Re: “Ah yes, my mother is trying to set me up with male semi-finalists from American Idol now.” That’s funny… well at least she is trying.

The Mad Dater,
“Because there’s a Bastard in all if us”

Um, sorry, according to my mom I am going to marry him. HAHAHA

i feel your pain, charming. when my family lived in indianapolis, my mom (The Czarina) was on a mission to figure out how to meet the colts’ QB (peyton manning) so she could get us together. one day, there was this big article in the paper about his wedding and The Czarina was truly upset. she honestly thought this would happen.

and when i have real, actual boyfriends, she has zero interest in meeting them. it makes no sense.

12. jo - February 23, 2006

haha! and there i thought my mom was the only one trying to marry me off… but at least she hasn’t tried to marry me off to one of the american idols guys. darn! i would sure like to go with david radford… oh wait… he’s not even legal! sue me i’m a cougar haha!

13. Byron the Blue Light Broker - February 24, 2006

don’t worry. It happens on the XY side of life. My mom’s trying to set me up with her manicurist.

14. Krystle - February 24, 2006

LOL. I love that! Taylor is definitely a cutie and I think any man who can sing and play an instrument makes it into my totally-datable list.

My mom is the complete opposite of yours. Any time I date a guy or get a boyfriend she wants me to “keep my mind open” for other options. I think she would be perfectly happy if I ended up being an old cat lady eaten by her cats when she dies…although in my case it would probably be dogs…

15. Rees26 - February 24, 2006

I’ll be so jealous if you end up marrying Taylor.

Now, if only hottie Ace had as good of a personality! He makes me scream he’s so hot, but then when he opens his mouth to speak… not so much.

I thank god every day I have a mom who isn’t fixated on fixing me up with every yahoo.
