Pumpkin is the new black September 18, 2006

Though BFE is not yet engaged, we’ve been gossiping quite a bit about wedding details and plans, which is still kind of fun to do now because the reality hasn’t set in yet due to her nonengaged status.

Witness the following text message exchange:

Charming: So, all those years that you talked about orange bridesmaid dresses. You weren’t serious, right?

BFE: We’re hoping that the color of the wedding is going to be red-orange, yes.

Charming: I think orange is probably going to look bad on me. Are you absolutely sure I can’t wear black?

BFE: I’m not going to be a Bridezilla, but absolutely no black. I’m pretty firm on this.

Charming: I just want you to know that you’re the only person I love enough to wear an orange dress in your wedding.

BFE: I know, and I love you too. And you’re going to look beautiful and having you around me will make me look beautiful too.

That boy of hers better pop the question before I lose my willingness to wear orange.

Look at it this way: Maybe there will be some hot, single, emotionally available men at the wedding that won’t care two hoots whether you’re in orange, red, black or polka dots!

Have you ever watched movie Under the Tuscan Sun (or something like that). Sorry I just watched it this weekend and drew a blank at the title. Anyway at the end (for a wedding) she was wearing and orange dress that was very pretty. I don’t like orange myself but this color of orange was beautiful!

Pumpkin, huh? What color lipstick to you wear then? And the shoes? What color shoes?

well there’s orange and then there’s ORANGE. couldn’t you just wear red and be in line with the red-orange colour theme?

You know, I really lovce orange, but it seems such an odd wedding color. I wonder if the boredsmaids could just wear coral and carry some orange calla lillies? that seems more than fair.

I was totally with you on the orange bridesmaid dresses, until I saw this post today: http://writesandsnaps.squarespace.com/journal/2006/9/18/a-wisconsin-wedding.html

I think these look REALLY nice, esp. w/the flowers. (Just thought I’d share to try and lift your spirits.)

Now that’s friendship!

trivia: in ancient rome, the brides wore orange, not white.

that said, i’m kind of in the same boat as you right now. lady starfish just got engaged. she wants to have brown bridesmaid dresses.

brown makes me look pale, bloodshot and sick.

i told her she is the only person i’m willing to wear brown for.

and yeah–it is FIRE ORANGE or is it a nicer color? because a coral would be pretty. or even a canteloupe.

as far as shoes/makeup are concerned, i would wear a nude lip gloss to ensure it won’t clash. clinique makes one called shy beige–it’s great. as far as shoes are concerned….wow. i have no idea. maybe gold? or nude?

idea: maybe you can convince her to have one of those 2-piece bridesmaid gowns where the top part is a different color. at least then the orange wouldn’t be by your face.

another idea: if you are seriously dying at the concept of wearing orange, maybe you should remind her that orange bridesmaid dresses will take attention away from her in the photos…..just a thought.

ok, i’m out of ideas.

i just looked at the photos on the link. they look pretty good, i have to say. i mean, i wouldn’t pick it, but i think it looks pretty. very fall. very memorable. very different–in a good way. i hope you get that shade of orange.

Love your blog!! LOL @ the orange dress…no matter how you swing it, it’ll still be an orange bridesmaid dress. I don’t know too many people that can pull of orange (actually no one comes to mind)…good luck and Godspeed…

Yes, looking at those wedding photos made me happier about the color. However, I DO NOT want a strapless dress because I’ll spend the whole time pulling at it. Also, I think she wants to go with bold colors for flowers(think bright yellows and oranges and pinks). I do trust her taste. And I also know that there’s always mystic tan if necessary … and that she’ll consult on makeup to make sure it doesn’t look bad.

So, I have been stockpiling possibilities that are red orange without being too scary. Also, I am lobbying for an empire seam under the chest.

This is my personal favorite because I have a shirt with the same top and it looks great on me. I don’t know that she’s going to go for the length: http://www.davidsbridal.com/bridesmaids_detail.jsp?stid=2330&prodgroup=110&sid=7963

I also like this one, which has the same kind of concept for the top:

And if we have to go strapless, this one at least looks like it has some shape … and an empire seam:

This one is made in an orange/coral color, but I hate the back (click the orange swatch to see) because it will make our asses look big:

And, since we’re talking about weddings, if I were getting married tomorrow, this would be my pick for my bridesmaids, because I think it would look lovely on all of them:

Anyway, she’s not even engaged yet. I’m going to stop worrying and start working on a date. ;P

Reading your post, I thought it was a joke! Oh dear… You did find some lovely orange dresses, though.

The first you posted, Charming, is lovely. That would be my choice of the pumpkin hued frocks.

I can see orange being done right… and pretty, though it is not too common a wedding color.

And you are a good friend. I still bring up the fug’ tin man dress I had to buy for a friend’s wedding 7 years ago!

Ugh. Hate bridesmaid dresses. Perhaps you can convince her to just pick a color and fabric and have each girl pick a dress that is fab for her body. My friend did this and it worked out great. There were 4 bridesmaid. One was a much younger cousin who wore an age appropriate dres. The model thin friend with no cleavage look fab in the sheet with spaghetti straps. The large sister in law looked great in the two piece dress with a line skirt and cap sleeve top. I loved my empire waist a-line dress with the deep v neck that supported my more than ample DD’s.

Everyone was happy and not one of the bridesmaids complained about ugly bridesmaid’s dresses!
